Bullet Journal Stencils: Tips, Types and Examples

Bullet journaling is a popular way to organize your thoughts, goals, and tasks. And stencils are the perfect tool for making layouts that are both colorful and productive. But what if you don’t know where to start? Or need some inspiration for a new bujo layout?

In this blog post, we will share tips on bullet journal stencils – including which ones work best for different types of bullet journals! We will also give examples of how to use these tools in your own bujo. So put down your sticker pad because it’s time to get creative with some fun new ideas!

How to Use Stencils in Your Bullet Journal

Stencils are a great way to get that artistic look in your bullet journal even if you don’t have an artistic gene. Or maybe you actually do possess some artistry but want the easy time it takes with drawing boxes, banners, and tracker icons without having to sketch them from scratch. Stencils come in all shapes and sizes nowadays so there’s something for everyone!

Bullet journaling is a creative outlet for many people, but those with drawing skills can feel like they’re cheating when they use stencils to keep their layouts looking great. But don’t worry! There’s no shame in using the tools you need and there are plenty of ways that stencils will help your bullet journals be as beautiful as possible. You’ve got permission from me- so get out there and show off what you do best!

Plastic Bullet Journal Stencils

There are a number of different sellers on Amazon selling big sets of plastic stencils.  They work well if you like to use brush pens 

20 PCS Journal Stencil Plastic Planner Set for Journal

This set of stencils is designed specifically for journaling. They come in lots of shapes and sizes to help me decorate – there are 20 in the starter pack. It’s really easy, too – all you have to do is tape the stencil down with some washi before tracing your shape.

The stencil set is an excellent starter kit because you get to try out so many different shapes and sizes, which makes it easier when upgrading since you’re more likely to purchase the items that are most commonly used.

These stencils are so thin and light that you can carry them in your journal or notebook without worrying about bulk. You’ll be able to take a whole stack of these with you because they’re not too big.

JOYAHO 20 Pieces Drawing Stencils Set

This is another 20-pack that has over 300 images to stencil. It is aimed at kids but there’s no reason you can’t use in in your bullet journal. It is a great way to get fun images and icons into your spreads without mastering drawing them from scratch.  They will work with most pens for bullet journals too.

Brass and Metal Bullet Journal Stencils

When you’re ready to upgrade your bujo supplies, this is where you’ll want to go. I love how durable these stencils are and that they won’t wear out for years! You can be sure your bullet journal spreads will stay put on the material as well so there’s no need to worry about it sliding off from under your hand while tracing a shape- even if you’ve got kids running around who might bump into things or get too close with their little hands in an attempt at helping.

I find these stencils to be a great addition when I’m looking for more reliable and consistent precision. They’re definitely bulkier so they don’t easily fit inside my journal but with the ruler markings on them, it’s easy enough to just slide one out of its sleeve if I need some help in lining up something or making sure that measurements are accurate.

I love this style of stencil. Unlike other plastic stencil sets which can get damaged over time from repeated use as well as being less durable than metal ones, the stronger ones never seem too bendy and yet still maintain their shape after long hours of use.

This set of metal stencils covers most of the kinds of simple icons that you’ll need for bullet journaling including arrows, boxes, and lots of common symbols. They come in different shapes including one shaped like a smartphone! All are small enough that you could pop them in a case and take them with you or just pick your favourite.

Aleks Melnyk #1 Metal Journal Stencil/Flowers and Vines

This is an example of a metal stencil that lets you great some of the more arty elements for your bu-jo. There are things like leaves, vines, flowers, mushrooms, and also ornate patterns that make it easy to spruce up seasonal spreads or just make your basic weekly calendar more interesting.

Alphabet Stencils

For those of us who have been handwriting challenged and had to embrace sloppy lettering, sometimes we just want something neat. So why not pull out your handy dandy alphabet stencil with a few simple tricks? You’ll be able to create the perfect thing that will polish off any week or collection page in no time at all! Add some washi tape for extra flair – nobody will ever know you’re “not creative.”

TCOCOS Letter Stencil Pack

This is a great starter stencil set that focuses on alphabets but also includes some other everyday stencils for use in planners and bullet journals. There are script style fonts, block styles, serif, and sans serif fonts. There’s also a stencil with the days of the week that are great for weekly spreads and another with the months of the year in a nice script font.

Nurkul 12 Pack Letter and Number Stencils

This pack of 12 plastic stencils focuses on letters and numbers with a range of different styles. My favourite is the ‘Old English’ style that I actually learned to write properly when I was a kid (for some reason, it always fascinated me!). The styles are a little more unusual than the other set and would complement it nicely.

Shape stencils

You might also want some shape stencils to help make shapes and to add patterns to your spreads. They are often popular as office supplies as there are so many ways to use them. 

Helix Angle and Circle Maker

This small tool is key to making perfect circles in your bullet journal. With the Helix Angle and Circle Maker, you can make 22 different-sized circles. From 1/8″ diameter to over 4″ circles, this affordable, handy little tool will help draw out circles much easier.  Uses could include creating habit trackers where you colour part of the circle each time you complete a routine.

Holiday and Seasonal Stencils

This is a great set of classic bullet journal stencils that are themed for the holidays and seasons. So there are stencils for Christmas and other holidays as well as seasonal stuff such as hot dogs and snorkeling gear for the summer break.

8 Pcs Christmas Stencils Template

This set appeals to the cardmaker in me but could still be used to make some lovely features or backdrops for your Christmas spread. They are a nice size and made from plastic plus there are some Christmas messages in script fonts.

ALIMITOPIA Halloween Bullet Journal Plastic Stencil Set

This set is a bit mad but I really love Halloween so they appealed to me. They would make a great spread where you don’t really need too much information in. Or could be used sparingly to accent spreads around this holiday.
