Bucket lists were one of those things that popped up a while back, I think there was a film. Anyway, suddenly everyone had one and everyone wanted to create their own unique spin on one. Like lots of things, you can easily create a bullet journal bucket list in your favourite journal or notepad. But where do you start? Let’s take a look.
What’s a bucket list again?
Shall we start with the basics – what is a bucket list?
In its simplest form, it is a list of things you want to do during your lifetime. Or at least, that was the original idea. Maybe you wanted to travel to certain places, have particular experiences, try different hobbies, or even something as simple as trying certain foods.

Bucket lists were a grand idea, a list of lifetime aims and something to work on all of the time. But of course, people quickly realised that they didn’t just have to be those ‘once in a lifetime’ type lists. You could make lots of different bucket lists for different things or have themes to them.
How to create a bullet journal bucket list
When it comes to creating a bullet journal bucket list, you can get as creative as you want – or just write a basic list! Here are some ideas on how to create one and what kind of things you might want to put on it.
Step 1 – Decide on the List
First, you will want to decide what the list is going to be about. Is it that ‘life’s ambitions’ type list or simply a list of things you really want to do this year? Is it an all-encompassing list or just something that you want to last you for a couple of years, maybe until a certain age?
Step 2 – Pick a Theme
Once you know what your list is going to be about, you can pick a theme. Let’s be honest, you can write a simple checklist but if you are a bullet journal fan, you are probably going to want to have a bit of fun with it.
Maybe it is a list of places to visit so you want to create a list with a map and pins for the locations. Or a list of dishes you want to try making so you could have some fun food icons for each one.
Step 3 – Start the List
With your theme or layout idea, you are ready to start making your bucket list. You might want to sketch it onto a separate sheet of paper first to get things just as you want them. Or you could even use a printable and add this to your bullet journal if that’s easier.
Fun ideas on how to do it
There are no limits to how much fun you can have creating a bucket list in your bullet journal. But let’s look at some examples for inspiration.
The rainbow theme
This is a simple one that has each goal in a block but adds some fun and colour with the clouds and the rainbow. It is a great layout that’s simple to recreate and you could even colour in the blocks once the goal has been completed.
Simple but useful
This theme is 22 Things To Do before 2022 and uses a simple series of 22 circles with the goal for each in it. Plus a few cute little icons to help make it a bit more visual. You could use the same idea to do ’25 things before I’m 25′ or ’40 things before I’m 40′ spreads.
Cheerful end of year spread
This is an ‘end of the year’ style bucket list that’s simple but still looks colourful and fun. Choose a fruit, flower, or other motifs to add and use the colours from it to accent the list and the surrounding area.

Seasonal bucket lists
Another fun way to use a bucket list is to make it seasonally or even monthly.
Christmas bucket lists are a fun idea, a list of all the Christmas-themed things you want to do before or by Christmas. You can include everything from the foods you have to eat to places to visit and even Christmas experiences!
Seasonal ones can be broken down into categories too. An example could be one that has places to visit, things to do and jobs around the house to be done during any one season.
Sometimes, you can just make the list seasonal-themed without having to limit yourself to doing everything in that season. Or you can make the list for a month – an October list could be all about the spooky experiences and Halloween jobs you need to do!
The perfect bucket list
The idea of the bucket list is one that keeps changing as people find more ways of using them. In a sense, they are just a big to-do list but it is fun to have a level of ‘things to do’ that’s different from your normal daily or weekly spreads.
